    Young Hmong Musicians

    Ib Txhis
The Kong & Shu Project is a project developed by Kong and Shu Lor. We developed this project during the summer of 2007 as a side project. We decided to challenge ourselves by writing music in our language. The project included writing and composing Hmong music. Writing music is a big challenge. By writing music in Hmong, it’s a great way to preserve your language and improve verbally. We hope the music we write will inspire or make your day better in some way. At the end of the summer, with the songs we have completed, we thought we would make an album and share it with the world. We released our debut album “Pib Qhov Twg” in December of 2007 at the Metrodome Hmong New Year in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We hope to continue writing music and sharing with you all.

    Pao Ly (Lis Pos)

    Lis Pos

Lis Pos started singing in 1978 for the Phooj Ywg Band in Nongkhai, Thailand. In 1977, approximately 15,000 youths lived in the Nongkhai camp. Due to the lack of school for these youths, Mr. Teng Lee, a law school graduate in the country of Laos established a youth organization. The purpose was to provide decent education and entertainment as well as other activities for the Hmong youths in the camp. Phooj Ywg Band was established through the youth organization under the leadership of Mr. Vue Yee. Mr. Vue was one of the Hmong song writer, and he also played the guitar at the time. Lis Pos initially volunteered to practice singing with the band. Amazing, his voice was smooth, gentle and attractive to the Hmong population, children, women, and men of all ages. Phooj Ywg performed drama along with songs, like "Opera", during the Hmong New Year Celebration in 1978. After the New Year, Phooj Ywg became popular. Even today, many of the children and those who had grown up in Thailand are still looking for those songs we recorded in the hatched house in the camp.

    HMONG ACTORS MAKING HISTORY

Legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood is making history in the Hmong community with his upcoming film Gran Torino. But this is not only Hmong news. By creating a mainstream Hollywood film that features mostly Hmong leads and supporting actors (other than Eastwood’s character), he’s giving unprecedented visibility to Hmong Americans. Says veteran Hollywood actor Wa Yang, who worked with Eastwood through a small role in Letters from Iwo Jima, “It’s creating exposure in Hollywood, where no one knows who the Hmong are. Hopefully it will pique interest and one day the story of how we came to the US can be told.
